In-Flight Skin Care, Tips & Advice

I've recently read quite a few blog posts and articles focusing around in-flight products and quite frequently I'm asked what my must have products are, as well as my in-flight tips. I'm no skincare expert, but weekly I spend a fair few hours cloud bound in not the most skin-friendly atmospheres and so I thought I would put together some of my knowledge based on my experience in the hope that it will help you and your skin 35,000ft above the ground.

Pre Departure
At work, I have to have a full face of make up on and as much as you would probably assume I love that, surprisingly, I don't. Weekly, I can see anything up to around 2000 passengers and more often than not, the majority of them are glammed up to the nines. I've been there and done that and know how tempting it is to board a flight looking uber fabulous, but my number one piece of pre departure advice would probably be to go bare faced. If you're not into leaving the house with no make up on, make sure you carry a good alcohol free make up remover to remove it before take off, in the past I've taken a travel bottle of Bioderma and it does the job perfectly. Naming no names, but this is what most of those A-list stars spend there time pre departure doing in their first class cabins.
35,000ft up, the air in even the fanciest of aircrafts is dry and recycled and anything that would dry and clog up your pores in a normal atmosphere, is more likely to do so in these conditions. Instead, I would recommend double cleansing and using a super hydrating skin care regime including as hydrating an eye cream and moisturiser you own pre-flight to prep, with a touch of a tinted lip balm if you really can't resist a touch of colour.

In-Flight Cruise
My most frequent question comes down to what products to use in-flight and although there are plenty of products I could list, my main advice would be to drink, drink, drink and by that, I'm talking water, not those ever so tempting miniatures that will dehydrate you further. With the cabin full of recycled and dry air, hydration is key and as crew I'm told to drink half a litre for every two hours of the flight. That much water does sound extreme, especially over a twelve over day but honestly, days where I haven't had at least half of that, I'm left feeling so dehydrated and suffer with what feels like a hangover for up to days after.

Being inside an aircraft for any amount of time is abnormal to your body. The pressure, the air system and everything that comes with that has an effect on you and your skin, so it really is so important that you look after yourself. Along with water, which not only hydrates you but cools you down and keeps you moving to and from the loo, which in turn helps to prevent DVT, I find there are a few essential products that work a treat at keeping you feeling and looking fresh.
I would personally try to stick to products you use in your regime already, and if you don't already use them, I would try to for a while beforehand just to get your skin used to them. It may seem like a great idea to try that new face mask that you purchased in Duty Free for the first time on your flight, but I don't trust using a product thats abnormal to your skin in an abnormal atmosphere, and I wouldn't want to risk any break outs or reactions on the first day of my holiday.

Hydrating Mask/Moisturiser- Just like drinking water to hydrate your body, your skin will be losing moisture so quickly and in turn will become dry, dull and dehydrated. A quick and easy fix for this is to apply a generous amount of moisturiser throughout the flight, or a personal favourite of mine; a hydrating sink in mask. My current favourites are Clarins HydraQuench*, Sisley Flower Gel*, Jurlique Rose Moisture Plus Cream Mask* and Origins Drink Up. In terms of your body, I tend to take a small pot of body lotion, but a bit of hand cream always works a treat for inflight.

Hand Cream- Surprisingly, I find my hands struggle with the effects of flying a whole lot more than my face does. Even with the make up. Day to day I don't tend to need a very strong hand cream, but during flights I can't recommend using a strong, hard working hand cream enough. Without something really nourishing, my hands can start to feel really tight and dry and like most of my colleagues, I always have a hand cream close by.

Lip Balm- Lip Balm is another absolute in-flight must have and my favourite of the moment is Elizabeth Ardens 8 Hour Intensive Lip Balm*. I'm on to my second one in just a few months but I can't get enough of reapplying it. It keeps my lips so moisturised which is super important for me as I have to wear lipstick which dries out quicker than you could ever imagine so it's an essential. If you want to arrive to your holiday destination wearing your new duty free lipstick, please apply it after the flight, the air really does horrible things and your lips dehydrate so quickly. You'll also be hopefully drinking lots of water, so there's no need to wear it in flight anyway as you'll be reapplying forever, try and stick to your tinted lip balm.
An in-flight tip of mine is to use your lip balm as a multi-use product, it makes for the perfect cuticle treat in-flight and it's surprisingly fab for your nostril area!

Eye Cream- For me, Eye Cream is really a pre-flight essential as I can't really apply it throughout the day, but as a passenger I would definitely have one to hand. Preferably something super moisturising and refreshing, which unfortunately I'm yet to find a must have recommendation, but I've really been enjoying the Origins No Puffery Cooling Eye Gel* to cool my eye area and to help avoid any puffy areas throughout the flight onwards.

Eye Drops- I wouldn't say eye drops are an essential, but they're often a product that gets overlooked. I don't wear contact lenses, but similarly to people that do, in dry conditions my eyes become unbearable. In a pressurised cabin, with a mixture of heat and air con pumping through the system, my eyes become very irritable and I find a couple of drops keep them hydrated, refreshed and helps to keep the Redness at bay. I go through bottles of the stuff due to their short life spans, but Optrex ones work really well for me.

Facial Mist- Face Mists have to be one of my favourite products day to day anyway, but I find they are just perfect for in flight. To freshen up and to pump some essential oils into your skin, they are dreamy and for the past year I have been absolutely loving using Caudalie Beauty Elixir*.

Sanitizer- If you're going to catch any germs anywhere, an aircraft is up there on the list. With hundreds of people sharing the same recycled air in the confined space of a metal tube, a sanitizer is very much essential. I have one in my pocket throughout the whole flight and apply it alot. It's not great as they tend to be alcohol based but in order to stay free of bacteria, germs and viruses, there's no getting around that you need a little bottle of sanitizer, especially if you're going to be going to the loo and completing your in-flight skincare regime! I imagine most of them do a good enough job, but I particularly enjoy using The Body Shop Satsuma Hand Sanitizer as it's super refreshing and smells delicious.

After Flight
Similarly to pre departure and in-flight, it's very important that you continue to drink lots of water and stay moisturised and hydrated after landing. Your body takes a little while to readjust after the flight and so I tend to treat it just as I would before/during the cruise. I go back to my Hydrating Mask after the flight and tend to go to sleep in it, in the hope that I'll wake up feeling fresh, but if you do have the opportunity to, I'd probably recommend cleansing and starting from fresh, just to ensure you're free of any dirt and grime, and go in again with your eye cream and a good moisturiser, preferably with some SPF ready for your travels if you're at the beginning of your holiday.

Top Flight Tips
-Stick to the 100ml hand luggage rule. I've known so many people to lose their fabulous perfumes and products when they took the chance of getting it through security.
-Drink lot's of water. Aim for half a litre per two hours of the flight.
-Avoid alcohol
-Avoid salty food, Pringles I'm looking at you.
-Have a walk around the cabin and stretch to avoid DVT, when the crew aren't out with their cart of course ;)
-Wear comfortable clothes and nothing too restricting and carry a blanket, when you're tired aircrafts suddenly become very cold
-Take the opportunity to rest as much as possible
-Enjoy and try not to let any nerves of flying get in the way of the experience.

Happy travels!

World Duty Free Secrets of Summer

Working from a bustling airport day to day, I am a frequent visitor into the wonderful world that is World Duty Free and find myself checking in to the beauty counters in London Gatwick for travel retail exclusives, holiday essentials and after work treats pretty often.

There's something extremely special about airport shopping that I personally love; the buzz and excitement of those going on their holidays and picking up last minute essentials, teamed with the tax free prices is to some, a huge part of their travels and so when I was told of World Duty Frees new YouTube channel, I was extremely intrigued.

I'm often asked what products work best for both in-flight and on holiday, as well as what brands can be purchased airside at the airport and World Duty Free have teamed up with Biza Tax & Duty Free to put together some Secrets of Summer Beauty videos with make up artist Annie Levy, to share their top tips and advice as well as tutorials for a range of summer looks, using some of the fabulous products that are available to buy in their duty free store.

Currently, Annie Levys step by step guide to becoming a Bronzed Goddess with World Duty Free video appeals to me the most and using brands that are already firm favourites of mine such as Estée Lauder, MAC, Clarins, YSL, Sisley and Bobbi Brown, I'm desperate to hit the newly refurbished LGW counters again soon to recreate the looks as best I can.

World Duty Free will be continuing to upload video content with your travels in mind and so if you are interested in holiday looks as well as products and brands that are available to buy in World Duty Free, visit their YouTube channel here.

What's your favourite holiday look? Do you have any duty free must haves that you have to pick up before hitting the departure gate?

Sisley Phyto-Touches Sun Glow Pressed Powder

I'm very much a bronzer girl and have been since the likes of Bronzing Balls were introduced to me at school. Whenever I browse a make up counter, the brands bronzer is normally my first point of call and when I saw this Sisley Sun Glow Pressed Powder* I was overwhelmed by the duo of shades and enticing packaging.

This compact is made up of two separate shades, a light Peach toned beige that I would describe as more of a finishing powder and a super pigmented Golden Bronze shade that appears to carry quite a heavy shimmer but actually translates quite subtle and more of a soft and gentle sheen.
Sisley advise to use the lighter, larger shade all over the centre of the face and the smaller Bronze shade on your nose, cheekbones, forehead and chin, as I would anyway to contour.
I personally don't find I use the lighter shade as often as the darker and if I could change one thing about this product, I would have them swap places for size.

I really like the glow that the sheen from the product gives and find it helps the bronzer to look a little more natural for the day time wear and more effective for evening looks.
I'm not sure on the scent of the product; similar to other Sisley products it is quite perfumed and a bit too mature smelling, but I can put the scent aside for the quality of the product itself.

The packaging is absolutely beautiful and I would be lying if I said it isn't what caught my eye initially. With a brushed effect metal packaging, it is about four and a half inches in length and holds a full size mirror which makes it the perfect of my make up bag.

I don't find I use this as my day to day bronzer, but it's definitely one I reach when I'm putting in a little more effort with my make up, for evenings out etc.

This Sisley Phyto-Touches Sun Glow Pressed Powder is available in two colour variations; this Peach and Gold duo as well as a darker Honey and Cinnamon, which I would love to try.

At £62, they're certainly not the most affordable bronzers on the market, but as with all Sisley products, it is lovely quality and a nice treat.

Sisley is available to buy in Liberty, House of Fraser, Harrods and John Lewis.

Sisley Gentle Make Up Remover for Face and Eyes

When it comes to removing my make up, a product that comes high up the list in terms of convenience and quick removal, whilst also being gentle on my skin is always going to be a winner for me. I like to use a product that does a brilliant job at removing my make up quickly, without compromising my skin and a product that has been working beautifully well for me over the past few months is this Sisley Gentle Make Up Remover for Face and Eyes*.

Though it is easily the most expensive make up remover I have ever tried and probably ever will try, it is a really nice product to use and the feature that first caught my attention is the pump which I find super convenient and wish more products would use. I know picking up a bottle and squeezing a little product out is far from difficult but I'm all for a gimmick and love that after a couple of simple hassle free pushes of my cotton pad, I am left with the perfect amount of product.

I find this works beautifully at removing my make up and leaves my skin feeling so great and looking clean and matte afterwards, but I do find it doesn't work as great at removing my eye make up as other removers I have tried, which is a shame. As well as that factor, I have sadly found that once or twice it has led my eyes to sting a little, which isn't so great, even though it is said to be safe to use on sensitive eyes. Though that put me off for a couple of days, it hasn't stopped me from using it in the long run as I rarely wear a heavy eye and my pros vastly outweigh the cons.

I find the natural fragrance of the product is quite strong which isn't perfect for my personal taste, but it is said to work for all skin types including sensitive.

This handy pump bottle of Sisley Gentle Make Up Remover for Face and Eyes is quite pricey and like I said probably the most expensive make up remover I'll ever use at £69 but if you fancy a treat it is available to buy at Sisley counters in Selfridges, Space NK and Liberty.

Sisley Express Flower Gel

I first became aware of this face mask when researching into products that would be great for my skin and would sit underneath my make up well, for flights at work. Lisa Eldridge mentioned it in her Long Haul Beauty Regime video last year and since hearing of it then, it seems to have popped up on my radar quite often.

This Sisley Express Flower Gel* is essentially a gel-like face mask that works to hydrate, tone and firm skin pretty beautifully in an extremely quick time. Applied before my make up, it absorbs into my skin within just a couple of minutes, leaving a perfectly firm, soft and hydrated base to work on.
It really does settle into my skin in a super speedy time and although in the directions it does say to blot to absorb any excess product after three minutes, I personally don't find I am left with much at all, if any by that time.

It's said to be a favourite amongst make up artists throughout Fashion Week, as it's a great quick prep to use on their models skin before make up application and I can believe it. I've been applying this to my skin on days when my skin needs that little bit of a boost and it does a great job at hydrating my skin and leaves it feeling super soft on days both with and without make up.

When I go back to flying everyday in the Summer months, I already know that this is going to be an essential for me, because on days where I am waking up at possibly 3am, I really don't want to be faffing about with a timely skincare regime. Absorbing so quickly and giving my skin the essential hydrating qualities it needs for a long flight, even underneath my make up, it will be a dream and with the Flower Gel working to get rid of any signs of fatigue and stress, it will see me perfectly for an average day in the sky.

At £74.50 for this 60ml bottle, this Sisley Face Mask isn't the most affordable product on the market, but I am completely sold on it. However, as much as I want to reach for it all the time at the moment, I may pop it to the back of my stash for now, until I go back to work.

This Sisley Express Flower Gel is available at Space NK, Selfridges, Liberty and John Lewis.

Does this quick absorbing, hydrating face mask appeal to you?

Sisley Phyto Nude Lip Gloss

For a girl that's not so into lip glosses, this Sisley Phyto Lip Gloss in Nude* has well and truly won me over and featured in my day to evening make up quite regularly over the past month.

It's one of my favourite kind of shades and is a beautiful true Beige Nude. Worn on it's own, like swatched above, or on top of a lipstick it really is lovely and I find it so complimentary and not at all overbearing like I often find with other glosses.

It's the perfect formula for a lip gloss as it's not too sticky and it feels quite light on the lips making it easy maintenance with no real need for much attention.
Application is nice, although I would maybe prefer it to have a doe foot applicator rather than a brush, as a couple of times I have experienced brush lines after application, which although they disappear with the slightest pout of the lips, is the only real thing I would change.

As I mentioned, this lip gloss does feel pretty light on the lips and I find it leaves them feeling super soft and moisturised even when the gloss has worn off and needs a reapplication.

This Sisley Phyto Lip Gloss costs £30.50 for 6ml of product and is available at Sisley counters in Selfridges, Liberty, John Lewis and House of Fraser.

What do you think of this shade? Are you more of a lipstick or lip gloss girl?

Sisley Phyto-Blush Eclat- 5 Pinky Coral

This Sisley Phyto-Blush Eclat is named quite perfectly and fitting for my ever-growing collection of similar shades. Pinky Coral* is a beautiful blend of yes, Pink Coral shades that when brushed onto either the apples of my cheeks or just dusted lightly all over my cheekbones adds the perfect amount of colour and creates the perfect touch to my make up.

The embossed pan matches the design of the Zebra print mirrored compact, which although I think is certainly quite daring and flamboyant is very eye catching and adds some fun into your make up bag.
It's very different to the classic and elegant look that most Sisley products have, but actually it fits in pretty well.

The product is made up of both lighter and darker tones and this is so that you can use both shades separately in order to sculpt your cheeks into perfection.
I personally like to sweep my blusher brush over the whole pan, picking up both shades together which creates a beautiful, nicely pigmented matte Coral-Pink tone.
Though I'm careful to not go too over the top, I do like to go quite heavy with colour on my cheeks and the pigmentation of this product works great for that. If you do like more of a subtle look, then a little sweep of product, tapped off before application would be perfect.

This blush is made up of lots of fabulous active ingredients to do wonderful things to your skin including minimising surface imperfections with its soft focus effect but if I'm honest, although it does feel and look very soft, I'm not sure a blush can benefit my skins appearance too much.

Sisley is an extremely high end skin care and cosmetic brand, though like I mentioned in my previous Sisley post, they do tend to represent great quality and results. Although Sisley products are beautiful, I do feel that the price of some of their cosmetics are definitely more than what I usually like to spend.

This Sisley Phyto-Blush Eclat costs £48.50 and is available in Selfridges, Harrods, John Lewis and Liberty.

What do you think of this Sisley Blush? Would you use both shades to sculpt or would you blend them together like I do?

Sisley Skincare and Cosmetics

How incredible do all of these products look on this dressing table? Sisley really do pull out all of the stops when it comes to their products; the ingredients, the colour ranges of their cosmetics and of course, what I always fall for, the packaging are all incredible and super appealing from many different perspectives.

As a skincare brand, Sisley offer some exceptional products and although they are apart of the more expensive market they include some fantastic ingredients that offer great results, which is why the French brand has fans in 80 countries, over every continent of the world.

Sisley as a brand want to represent great quality with guaranteed results and although I am new to trying Sisley products myself, after hearing the companies history and concepts behind their products, I am extremely excited to use them.

There are a few products in their skincare range that appeal to me most including the Sisley Face Masks and their Global Perfect Pore Minimizer. These are two of the stand out products for me and I can't wait to give them a go.
In terms of cosmetics, some of Sisleys products have grabbed my attention for quite a while now.
The packaging of the products are all equally beautiful and pictured above are some of my favourites.
Their Hydrating Lipsticks not only come in an array of beautiful, super pigmented shades but they are also packaged in the the prettiest of Gold tubes which I love.

Second to lipsticks, which are of course my favourite, are their powder compacts which are pretty fancy.
The Phyto Blush Eclats, Sunglow Pressed Powders and Powder Compacts all come in beautiful mirrored compacts that are so nicely embossed and designed in either the most beautiful of Gold packaging and even Zebra and Leopard Print, which in Sisleys rather classic collection definitely stand out.

I would love to know if you have tried any of Sisleys products and what your favourites are?
Have you currently got your eye on anything from their ranges?
